Summer in London can be fabulous, but commuting in the heat (if we’re lucky!) with higher numbers of tourists can present unique challenges. We spoke to various professionals in office support jobs in London to gather their top tips for making your summer commute more bearable. From staying cool to efficient travel strategies, here’s what they had to say.
Stay cool on the Tube
One of the most critical aspects of a summer commute is staying comfortable on the Tube which can get really hot on sunny days.
Darcy, who commutes daily by tube, recommends, “Always carry a bottle of water with you that’s been in the freezer overnight. It’s drinkable by the time I’m on the tube but helps keep me cool. I also bring a small portable fan – it’s a lifesaver on those particularly hot days.”
Jamal who is an office manager suggests wearing breathable fabrics, “Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are much cooler than synthetics. Most London offices have a more relaxed dress code in summer.”
Plan your journey
Efficient planning can save you time and reduce stress during your summer commute.
Sophia who is a PA emphasises the importance of checking travel updates, “Before you leave, always check for any travel disruptions. Apps like Citymapper or TfL Go can provide real-time updates and alternative routes if there are delays. It saves a lot of hassle.”
Liam works in IT support and suggests starting your journey a bit earlier or later, “If your job allows for flexible hours, try to travel outside of peak times. The trains and buses are less crowded, and it’s generally cooler in the morning or later in the evening.”
Carla works in event management. She suggests, “The tourist crowds can be really hard work in the summer months. If your journey is typically affected, ask if you can work remotely more, or adjust your hours to avoid the tourist times.”
Embrace alternative transport
Exploring different modes of transport can make your summer commute more pleasant.
Chloe is a finance administrator and loves cycling, “If you can, consider cycling to work. It’s not only a great way to stay fit, but you also avoid the crowded public transport. It can be scary in the busy areas, but I’ve learned which route to take which ensures I’m not dodging buses!”
Omar works in admin support suggests, “They might be a touristy thing but I occasionally take a rickshaw! It makes my commute fun and the riders are always fabulous people.”
Ava, who is a HR Manager, says, “In summer I walk to the office. I love walking through the London streets in the cooler morning air and avoiding the Tube or a stifling bus. A route that would be miserable in winter is lovely to walk in summer, so maybe swap up how you get to work.”
