A week in the life of a fashion merchandiser

There are so many different office support jobs in London to choose from. If you’re interested in a career in fashion then becoming a fashion merchandiser could be of interest to you. Here we share the story of Amy, a fashion merchandiser working for a large fashion brand in London.

Amy’s week as a fashion merchandiser

Every day is different as a fashion merchandiser but it puts you at the heart of the fashion industry. Here’s an overview of my week last week!

Monday

Every week starts with a departmental meeting. Coffees are grabbed and we’re all in the office where we chat through apparel merchandising, planning and sourcing. We take a look at sales stats. We look at individual items and collectively decide our way forwards. As fashion merchandiser, it’s my job to present each style in detail to the group.

After the meeting, my day is spent responding to emails and checking through the business social media.

Tuesday

On Tuesday I take some time to work on a particular product category for the spring season. I oversee the work of a merchandising assistant, so we also review her work before jointly considering ways to improve communications with Planning & Sales. We’ve got some new samples in so we think about the best way to showcase these.

After the meetings, I book in follow-ups. Jason from Sales has some questions, so we have a coffee and chat.

Wednesday

On Wednesdays I work from home, so I mostly use this day to deal with emails and social media. I have a video call with the Italian Sales team. They’ve got some new submissions to discuss and want some new samples, so I organise that.

I use the afternoon to look at the marketing plan for the next range and consider any weaknesses in it. I feed back to Paula, but mostly it’s good to go. Then it’s on to some purchasing to round off the day.

Thursday

It’s back in the office for a model details meeting. I report on all the latest purchases and get feedback on changes required. We’ve got a few switches to make – particularly with button colours, so that gets added onto my To Do list. I then spend most of the day creating the document that contains all the details for some items in the new range – colours, quality, style number etc.

Friday

Today is mostly spent continuing with my report and following up on all the meeting feedback. We’ve got a model meeting and it’s great to see everything coming together. We go out for lunch as a team – one of the benefits of working in London is that Friday lunches are always fabulous. I finish off the afternoon with some emails and tying up loose ends before the weekend.
