How to be an Effective Summer Temp

Posted on Friday, July 17, 2026 by Tamsin

Summer is a busy time for temping. While plenty of permanent staff are taking annual leave over the school holidays, businesses still need the office to run smoothly. That’s where you come in.

If you’re stepping into a temporary role to cover holidays, you might only be there for a few days or a few weeks. But that doesn’t mean your contribution is any less important. In fact, being an effective summer temp is all about making yourself useful quickly, being reliable, and helping to keep things ticking over without drama.

Understand what the business needs from you

Before you start, get clear on exactly what the role involves. Some summer temp jobs are all about keeping reception covered and being the friendly face of the business. Others might focus on diary management, admin support, processing invoices or helping a team stay organised while key people are away.

The more you understand the purpose of the role, the easier it is to prioritise and add value much faster.

If you’re working with a recruiter, like us, ask questions before your first day. It’s always helpful to know the dress code, the systems you’ll be using, who you’ll report to and what tasks you’ll be doing.

Make a strong first impression from day one

When you’re in a short-term role, there isn’t much time to ease yourself in. Turning up a few minutes early, looking polished and bringing a positive attitude can go a long way.

You don’t need to know everything straight away, but you do need to show that you’re switched on, approachable and ready to help. Listen carefully during handovers, take notes, and don’t be afraid to ask sensible questions at the start. It’s much better to clarify something early than make avoidable mistakes later.

Pick things up quickly and stay organised

Holiday cover often means stepping into a busy office where people don’t have hours to train you. That’s why being adaptable matters so much in temporary roles.

Keep a notebook/digital list of key processes, logins (securely), key contacts, recurring tasks, etc. If someone shows you how to do something once, write it down.

Organisation is especially important in office support jobs in London, where you may be juggling multiple requests from different people. If you can stay calm, keep track of priorities and follow through on tasks, you’ll stand out for all the right reasons.

Be proactive, but don’t overstep

One of the best ways to add value as a temp is to look for ways to be helpful. If you’ve finished your core tasks, ask whether there’s anything else you can take off someone’s plate. That might be tidying up a spreadsheet or something else that goes beyond your immediate remit.

That said, there’s a balance. In a short-term cover role, you’re there to support the business and keep things moving, not completely reinvent how things are done. Be proactive, but respectful of existing processes.

Treat every temp role like an opportunity

Even if you only took the job to earn money over the summer, it can still open doors. Temporary assignments are a great way to build confidence, strengthen your CV and make new contacts. You may also discover the kinds of businesses and environments you enjoy working in most.

Many candidates find that short-term assignments lead to longer bookings, repeat work or even permanent opportunities. If you impress in one role, your agency is also far more likely to think of you when the next one comes in.

Leave a good impression at the end

Before you leave, make sure any handovers are clear, your notes are tidy and any outstanding work is flagged properly. If you’ve been covering for someone, leave things in good order so they can return from holiday without chaos.
