Starting out in human resources might seem a bit of a mystery when you’re new to the job market. Whether you’ve just finished your A-levels/college or graduated from university, you might be wondering how to get your foot in the door.

What does HR actually involve?

HR (human resources) is all about people. It’s a career where you’ll be helping businesses look after their employees - from recruitment and onboarding to payroll, training, and staff wellbeing. It’s a varied and people-focused field, and there's plenty of room to grow.

Do you need a degree?

If you’ve done a degree in something like business, psychology, or sociology, it can help, but it’s not essential. What kind of experience helps?

Any experience in an office environment is useful, especially if it involves admin, customer service, or working with confidential information. If you’ve worked in retail, hospitality, or even volunteered, highlight how you’ve handled people, solved problems, or stayed organised. These are all skills that transfer well to HR.

Temping can be a great way to build up this experience. By taking on temporary HR jobs in London, you’ll get a feel for different companies, boost your CV, and often open doors to longer-term roles. It’s also a brilliant way to show what you’re capable of in real-world situations.

What qualifications can you get?

If you’re serious about progressing in HR, the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) is the main professional body. Their Level 3 Foundation Certificate is a good starting point. Some employers will support you to study while you work, especially if you start in a junior role. But don’t worry, plenty of people begin without formal HR qualifications and work their way up.
