Working for a start-up in London is an experience unlike any other, especially for those in office support roles. The capital’s thriving start-up scene offers a unique blend of excitement, challenge, and opportunity, making it a highly attractive option for job seekers.

But what is it really like? We spoke to several candidates in various office support jobs in London to get their first-hand accounts.

It’s fast-paced

One of the most commonly cited aspects of working in a start-up is the fast-paced environment. “It’s exhilarating but also demanding,” says Katie, a 29-year-old office manager at a tech start-up in Shoreditch. “You have to be on your toes all the time because things can change in an instant. One minute you’re planning an event, and the next, you’re setting up a new office space.”

For many, the unpredictability of the start-up environment is a double-edged sword. David, who works in a fintech start-up, echoes this sentiment, “The pace can be overwhelming at times, especially when you’re juggling multiple tasks. But it also means that no two days are the same, which I love. There’s a real sense of achievement when you help the company navigate through a challenge.”

You learn all the time

Start-ups often provide ample learning opportunities, which is a major draw for those in office support jobs in London. “I’ve learned more in the last year here than in my previous five years of work,” says Amara, who works in a growing media start-up. “Because the teams are smaller, you get to wear multiple hats, which means you’re constantly learning new skills. I’ve gone from just answering phones to helping out with HR and even dabbling in social media management.”

Learning on the job is not only beneficial for career growth but also adds a layer of excitement to the daily routine. “The learning curve is steep, but that’s what makes it so rewarding,” says James, who works as a personal assistant at a health tech start-up. “You’re not just confined to your job description. If you’re interested in something, you’re encouraged to get involved. It’s a great way to build a diverse skill set.”

The culture is exciting

The culture within start-ups is another key aspect that attracts many to office support jobs in London. “There’s a real sense of community here,” says Marta, who is office administrator in a creative agency start-up. “We’re all working towards the same goal, and that creates a strong bond among the team. It’s less hierarchical compared to traditional companies, and everyone’s voice is heard, which I find really empowering.”

This sense of camaraderie is something that many in the start-up world appreciate. “In a start-up, you’re not just a cog in the machine,” says Karim, an operations assistant. “You’re a crucial part of the team, and your work has a direct impact on the success of the company. That’s incredibly motivating.”

It can feel a bit messy

However, working in a start-up is not without its challenges. The uncertainty and lack of structure can be daunting for some. “There are times when the lack of clear processes can be frustrating,” admits Sam. “But it’s often my job to get in there and document the process for going forwards.”
