How do I improve my chances of success at interview?

You put a great deal of effort into applications, and even more into interviews. As such, you want to maximise your chances of success. As London’s leading recruitment agency, we’ve got the tips and tricks to ensure the greatest chance of success at interview.

Check out these interview success ideas:

1.    Research the company

Learn about the company's history, mission, values, and products or services to show your interest and knowledge during the interview. This improves your chance of success because it shows that you are motivated to get this job and engaged in the process. Furthermore, you can self-select if you definitely want to attend the interview as you can envisage yourself working there.

2.    Prepare answers to common interview questions

Anticipate common interview questions, such as "Tell me about yourself" or "Why do you want to work here?" and practice your answers. Specifically, think about certain scenarios and examples from your working experience that can be used to illustrate an answer. These will help you answer behavioural and scenario-based questions in the way the interviewer wants to hear.

3.    Practice active listening

Pay attention to the interviewer's questions and actively listen to their responses to show engagement and interest in the conversation. This also helps to manage nerves, when it’s easy to mishear the actual question. Active listening shows how you will take direction but it also ensures you answer the question accurately.

4.    Prepare questions you can ask

Prepare a list of questions to ask the interviewer, such as "What are the biggest challenges faced by the team?" or "What are the opportunities for growth and development within the company?" If possible, make these questions very specific, based on your research of the business. By preparing interesting and unique questions, you demonstrate keenness for the role and the specific employer.

5.    Act confident

Ok, you might not feel completely confident, but it’s important to maintain a positive attitude and confident demeanour throughout the interview to show enthusiasm and a strong work ethic. What’s more, if you act confident, you’ll feel more confident too! Dressing professionally will also help you to feel confident and prepared.

6.    Arrive early

Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the scheduled interview time to allow for unforeseen circumstances and to show punctuality. If you’re much earlier, pop into a local coffee shop. Never be late! Arriving early helps you to feel confident and prepared for when you’re called through.

7.    Practice

If you want to improve your chances of success at interview, we highly recommend practice. There’s nothing else you’d expect to be good at without a little repeat practice and interviews are no different. Get a friend or family member to do a mock interview with the job description for the role. Alternatively, your consultant at Love Success will be happy to help you develop your interview skills.
