A day in the life of a corporate receptionist

Interested in becoming a corporate receptionist? Fiona took us on a journey through her day to give you some insight into one of the most interesting office support jobs in London.

What does a corporate receptionist do?

A corporate receptionist is one of the most enjoyable office support jobs in London and entails working in a corporate environment, welcoming employees and clients, taking calls and looking after the reception area and meeting rooms. I also take responsibility for preparing the paperwork for meetings so that all the delegates have access to the right information when they arrive.

How do you start your day?

I’m often up quite early and like to make sure I am organised for the day ahead. I always have breakfast at home and take that time to think through what I need to get done during the day. This is when I will start to prioritise what needs to be done as soon as I get into work and what can wait until later in the day. I get into the work zone!

What’s the first job when you arrive at work?

When I get into work my first task is to make a coffee, usually for myself and whoever is already in work. Then I will get everything set up on reception that I need and make a list of the tasks I had mentally prioritised while I was having breakfast. My role is pretty varied so I sometimes need to be in early if the meeting room is booked for a breakfast meeting, but this gives me the chance to get ahead with tasks that need to be done.

Do you get time for a break?

Yes, definitely. Even on the busiest of days it’s always made clear to us that we have to take time out so that we are refreshed and ready to carry on. The company I work for takes employee wellbeing very seriously and encourages us to take our breaks away from our desks so that we don’t end up working through them.

How do you organise your work?

I’m a huge fan of a to-do list and write down all my daily tasks so that I can tick them off as I go and ensure that nothing gets missed. No two days are the same at work and so my to-do list helps me to cover everything and prioritise jobs to suit the needs of the service.

Would you recommend your job to others?

Absolutely – I am really lucky to have the best job in the world! I love the buzz and love working in London.
