Why did you look for a long-term temping position?
After the birth of my daughter, I was keen to re-enter the workforce but needed a role that would fit with my parenting role. I wanted to get a job in administration but had no experience, so I started to look for temping jobs to help me gather the experience I needed. I was lucky to be offered a long-term temporary position with a company in the city, not too far from home, and I've not looked back.
What steps did you take to settle in?
Getting a long-term position means that you can take the time to get to know the ways things are done as well as getting to know the people. I made it my mission to find out all the required processes and follow them so that my work wasn't a burden on any of the managers checking it. I also made a big effort to get to know people and accepted invites to drinks and lunches so that I could become part of the team.
What does each day look like?
I get up each morning and drop my daughter off at childcare before heading into the office at 8 am. I start by checking any urgent admin tasks assigned to me and work on completing and submitting them before continuing with any longer-term tasks I have to do. I often get asked to take minutes for meetings and handle calls from clients too. I love the variety as it keeps me busy and makes each day go really fast. I finish at 4 pm, pick up my daughter, and make dinner.
What advice would you give someone taking on a long-term temp role?
The best advice I have is to take the time to get to know people and work hard to become part of the team, as you will be there for a while! It's also a good idea to check out the policies and procedures for the company so that you can be sure that your work aligns with your employer's expectations.
