A level results are out on Thursday 18th August, and if you’re left feeling glum because you didn’t get the grades you hoped for and needed to get onto your chosen course, it can feel like the door of opportunity being slammed shut. However, while A level results can feel like a defining moment of your life, they aren’t the be-all-and-end-all that spells out whether you will have a future successful career.
Indeed, at our London recruitment agency, time and again we hear candidates coming back to us saying that not getting onto the university course they wanted, first time, was a positive thing. It may have led to a change in direction that turned out to be more fruitful, enabled a travel experience that otherwise wouldn’t have happened, or simply meant they had a better time at university going a little later with some maturity (and cash) under their belt.
So what are your options if your A level results aren’t what you want?
Everyone will tell you about your main option: Clearing. In some cases, Clearing can be helpful, if you’re flexible. But it can feel a bit like falling into a course and location, rather than choosing it.
Additionally, advisors may recommend taking a gap year and applying again next year, either with retakes or to a different course. There’s a lot to be said for a gap year in these circumstances. But, in our opinion, it all comes down to how you use your gap year. And that’s where you’re rarely recommended one of the best solutions there is.
Do a gap year doing temporary jobs in London to build experience
18 year olds who have done A Levels are in a strong position for applying for temporary jobs in London within office support. This gives you the opportunity to gain experience in the workplace. Not only does this help you build a strong CV which could help you earn money during your eventual university course in a much more pleasant way than bar work or retail, it may even help you determine what you want to do with your career. It’ll even make you more employable into the world of business once you’ve gained your degree, as it’ll set you apart from those whose work experience is limited to hospitality and retail.
The benefits of doing temp work in office support go further too. You are likely to earn a good wage, important for saving for uni or taking some of the gap year for travel. You will have the opportunity to work with a variety of people in different settings, building your life experience, boosting your maturity, and helping you better determine what you want to do. You can try out different workplaces and industries, learning about them from the inside. You may even be offered an apprenticeship off the back of temping in London – hello to no graduate debt!
Working in temporary jobs in London also enables you to take a flexible approach to a gap year. If you decide to retake exams then you can work around this, or perhaps you want to do extended trips doing things like Inter-Railing or working abroad for a season.
