Jobs in finance and accounting are far more diverse than many people realise. If you’re interested in a job in accounting or finance then read on to hear from people actually doing these jobs about what their roles involve.

Credit Control

“I’ve built my career within Credit Control,” says Christine. “Credit control is really important to every business. I chase invoices, monitor them coming in and process everything to do with invoices and statements. I find it really satisfying to achieve success with resolving unpaid invoices. You need to be tenacious, professional and resilient to succeed in credit control.”

Sales & Purchase Ledger

Niamh tells us about her role in Purchase Ledger. “I keep meticulous and organised records of all of the purchase invoices that come in from suppliers. We are a large manufacturing business so this is a complex job. It’s my responsibility to oversee reporting which helps with cash flow.”

Financial Analyst

Harriet says, “I work as a financial analyst. It’s my responsibility to offer tailored advice to businesses so that they can make decisions about their investment choices. I have a keen head for figures of course, but importantly, I can spot trends and assess data within the context of specific industries. It’s a complex role that draws on many different skills but has proven to give me a worthwhile career.”

Financial Controller

Adam told us, “As a financial controller, I am responsible for quite a large team. Together, we are responsible for everything to do with the organisation’s financial operations. It’s important to be both a good manager and have an excellent understanding of the financial context of the business. It takes time to achieve this level in your career, but it’s an interesting and varied role.”

Finance Manager

“As the Finance Manager I take charge of the entire day to day running of the finance department, under the CFO,” says Jamila. “I am involved in regular checking of things like balance sheet reconciliations but I also play a vital role in the strategic financial planning and analysis of the organisation and support and offer guidance to other managers and senior leaders.”

Accounts Payable

Charlie says, “I have an aptitude for numbers so I always knew I’d go into a finance career. I record and track the monies that are due to suppliers and process payments.”

Payroll

“In payroll you get to combine numbers with people skills,” says Vishal. “I work for a medium company so I’m involved in every aspect of administering payroll from actually paying wages, bonuses and expenses through to filing reports to HMRC and senior managers.”

Accounts Assistant

Rahil told us about his role as an accounts assistant. He said, “As an accounts assistant your role is to offer support throughout the accounts function in whatever way this is needed. Most of the role is administrative support, so I may be replying to emails, answering calls and completing filing. I also do some basic bookkeeping.”
