The latest KPMG and REC Report on Jobs indicates the UK jobs market is showing resilience and promise despite ongoing market challenges. Our latest report summary highlights some other valuable insights, including a record-high net flow out of economic inactivity, which is positive for the UK labour market, and a big push to get people back into the workplace.
Temporary jobs in London are leading the way
London was amongst the areas of the country where the decline in permanent placements continued with a notable increase in the number of businesses turning to temporary workers to manage their staffing needs. Indeed, temporary employment has increased for the 31st consecutive month, indicating greater demand for temporary workers.
Kate Shoesmith, REC Deputy Chief Executive, said: “As hirers work out what variable economic forecasts might mean for their business and staff, it makes sense that we continue to see temp billings hold up so well. Temporary staffing ensures firms can continue to provide goods and services, and people can grow their careers – even when the economic outlook is unclear.”
Vacancy growth is improving giving candidates better choice
Vacancy growth has improved for the second month in a row, with a four-month high in overall vacancy growth. While it remains softer than the average of the past 25 years, it is a positive sign for the job market. It’s worth noting that secretarial and clerical roles are amongst those in higher demand.
Candidate supply issues are softening slightly
The decline in candidate supply has softened, with overall candidate supply falling at a slower pace than in January. The availability of permanent staff remains on a downward trend, but the rate of contraction was the slowest since March 2021. It’s also worth highlighting that London is bucking this trend and candidate supply actually increased in the capital last month.
Candidates can expect better pay when they start a new role
Starting pay for both permanent and temporary roles continues to rise sharply due to difficulties attracting skilled staff and the rising cost of living. Despite some challenges, the UK jobs market is moving in the right direction and we are confident that with the right strategies and recruitment agency support, both employers and job seekers will continue to thrive.
