The best career advice at the end of the year

Thursday, November 19, 2015

At this time of year we all have a tendency to look back and reflect on just about everything, including our career paths. We make New Year's resolutions, lists of achievements for 2015 and we generally reflect on who we are and what we want to achieve in the years ahead.

To help put our goals into perspective, we wanted to show you just how the other half made it to the top!  We have been researching some of the world's biggest influencers to determine their key recipes for success. You'll be inspired by their stories of rags to riches and indeed their advice for achieving true success and self-realisation.

Barbara Corcoran is a multimillionaire and real estate mogul.  She was not a high flyer at school or during her early adulthood, in fact, she got straight Ds in school and had 20 jobs before she was 23 years old. However, Barbara admits she is proud of failing at a young age as it gave her the inner drive to push herself to succeed. Her advice is to:

"Ignore what your parents say."

Carlos Ghosn is a successful entrepreneur and is considered a living legend.  His claim to fame was reintroducing the renowned automotive brand Nissan in the early 2000s. As CEO at Renault-Nissan Alliance, he believes in the power of diversity. He has worked and lived in various places across the globe and his advice is to be open for diversity:

"Your world is going to be more and more diverse. You're gonna have to live with people of different education, culture, beliefs, backgrounds."

Kat Cole is the president at Cinnabon.   She started her career as a waitress at Hooters - a popular, somewhat low-key bar.  Her career escalated drastically from serving chicken wings to working at the corporate office, and pretty soon she became the Company's president. Her advice?  Remain determined and persistent as she says:

"You can pretty much do anything that you put your mind to."

Sallie Krawcheck is one of the most powerful names on Wall Street, but there was a time when she thought she would not even continue to work:

"I was pregnant. I was in my 30s, with an infant, married and unemployed. I thought, that's it. That's it. I went to college on a scholarship. I've let them down. I went to business school, I got in debt. I've let myself down. I'm done."

She defied all odds through sheer determination and self-belief and is now a prominent broker on Wall Street. Listen to her advice here

Ban Ki-moon grew up in a war zone. At a very young age he saw how the United Nations helped rebuild his country, South Korea. Today he is the current Secretary General of the UN and he meets world leaders on a daily basis.

There are times when each and every one of us has doubts about career choices. As Ban Ki-moon asks himself "Had I sought some other career path would I have been, or could I have been successful?" Watch this short testimonial to see his valuable advice.

If there's one thing these influencers can teach us, is that there isn't one recipe for success, just sheer determination, self-belief and a whole lot of hard work!
