What Do You Do in Your Spare Time When Living and Working in London?

London is full of things to do, but figuring out what suits you can be tricky. We’ve been chatting to some of our non-Brit candidates who work in office support jobs about what they get up to in the evenings and during weekends.

Pub life, club nights

“It’s England—you’ve got to discover your local and build a life around it,” says Freddie. “Heading to the pub on a Friday after work is just what you do. And the clubs in London are fantastic, too. There’s huge variety.”

Wandering on the South Bank

Jamie says, “After work, I really enjoy going for a walk on the South Bank. This area runs along the Thames, and it is bustling and vibrant but with brilliant views of the city. I love how the mood changes with the weather and there’s always something new to discover.”

Volunteering

“I decided to get stuck into the London community by volunteering in my spare time,” says Kiri. “It’s been brilliant for making friends and getting to know others. It’s worthwhile and helped me get to know London properly, rather than just having the tourist experience.”

Discover the museums

Claudia tells us, “For me, I seem to spend every spare moment discovering a new museum, gallery, or exhibition. There really is so much to see here that I don’t think I’ll see everything I want to before I go back to Australia. Many of the museums are free or low-cost too, and often have late opening. I spend all my free time being fascinated!”

Travelling

“I knew the UK was small before I came,” says Arron, “But I hadn’t realised I’d be able to explore so much of it on my days off. I’ve spent weekends in Scotland, Wales, and even Paris! Next up, I’m planning a trip to Belgium!”

Lazy days in the park

Cali tells us, “London is full of parkland. It feels like every way you turn there is another green space. But I really love the bigger parks, like Regent’s Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens. It’s great to head there with friends for some downtime, especially on a sunny day with a picnic.”

Attractions galore

Arthur says, “It’s difficult to imagine before you come to London just how much will be on your doorstep. Londoners do entertainment really well. So, whether you fancy a day taking selfies in Madame Tussauds or learning about conservation at the zoo, there’s always something to do.”

Best shopping

“You can’t beat London for shopping,” says Kaya. “There are the super well-known areas like Oxford Street, but I also love heading out to Westfield or dipping into the quirky boutiques in Covent Garden and Soho. Camden Market is a great place to grab some bargains and just have fun browsing.”

Delicious food

Colin tells us, “My weekends are spent exploring London’s foodie scene. From buying fresh ingredients in Borough Market to indulging in street food in Brick Lane, it blows me away. London is hugely diverse, so there are so many different cultural tastes to discover. If you enjoy trying new things, then London is for you.”
