Top Places to Visit in the UK When You’re Working in London

If you’ve travelled across the world to find a job in London, then you’ll want to make the most of your time here. Most Aussies and Kiwis finding work in the UK arrive on a Tier 5 visa, which allows you to live and work in the UK for two years, but that’s all in one hit. That means your weekends are crucial for visiting the whole country!

The great news is that the UK is tiny (in terms of distances) compared to Australia and New Zealand, so there’s loads you can explore within reach of London when you’ve just got a weekend to spare. Here are our must-do UK adventures.

1. Brighton

Hop on a train and you’ll be in Brighton in just over an hour. Brighton is a seaside city with a hip and happening vibe. Head here to discover English seaside life, fish and chips on the pier, and some of the best clubs in the country.

2. Edinburgh

Take a flight and you can be in Edinburgh in under an hour from London. Enjoy a city break in Scotland’s capital by exploring the Castle and the Royal Mile, going for a hike up Arthur’s Seat for spectacular views, and sampling some Scottish whisky.

3. Peak District

Ideal if you can hire a car for the weekend, the Peak District is a stunning National Park a few hours’ drive from London. The Lake District is probably calling you, too—but save this for when you’ve got some days off work, as it’s a further trek; the Peak District will wow you with its beauty in the meantime.

4. Stonehenge

You can’t come to the UK and not go to Stonehenge. It’s near compulsory—it’s one of the oldest UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world! So, come and marvel at this magnificent monument.

5. The Cotswolds

Picture quaint little villages, babbling brooks, and postcard cottages and you’ve got the Cotswolds. Within a few hours of London, you can have a weekend in this beautiful area. Don’t forget your afternoon tea!

6. Cambridge

You could visit Oxford while visiting the Cotswolds, but the other majestic university city worth a visit is, of course, Cambridge. Go punting on the river and explore the ancient colleges for a wonderful time.

7. Bath

Bath is a West Country city easily accessible from London. Visit the Roman Baths before indulging in the modern ones. Come at Christmas and enjoy the market in the shadows of the cathedral.

8. Snowdonia

Head to Snowdonia in Wales for a weekend of mountain fun and exploration. The scenery is spectacular and you don’t even have to be a hiker to enjoy it, as there is a train to the top of Snowdon.

There are many more places that you can easily visit during a weekend away from London. Other favourites include Windsor, Canterbury, Cornwall, York, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool, and even Ireland. There’s so much to explore, and so much of it is within reach of living and working in London.
