The facilities assistant

“I’m currently working as a facilities assistant,” says Gracie. “I prepare meeting rooms, keep the office tidy, and organise repairs. I have to be quite fit to move furniture around and I love the organisation involved with keeping records and supplies. I’ve enjoyed trying out this role, but I can’t see myself doing it long-term. Temping makes it easy to move on.”

The marketing executive

Rob is a marketing executive. He says, “I’m temping in London at the moment because I had a two-year contract end and I’m yet to settle on my next project. It’s a great opportunity for me to come back into a large organisation and discover how the cogs of big departments work. Normally, I’m a jack of all trades, but here my tasks are quite specific.”

The customer service representative

“I’ve been working in customer service for over a decade,” says Ailsa. “I’m actually starting to think about a career change and that is why I have started looking at temporary jobs in London. This way, I can get more diverse experience, so that I can bridge over to other roles when I’ve got enough experience and knowledge. I’m not 100% sure what I want to do, so temping allows me to try before I buy. I look after numerous client accounts and I’m finding it very interesting.”

The HR generalist

“I’ve been recruited as an HR generalist for a three-month contract for a company in London to help them with some change management,” says Antony. “It’s quite common in HR to bolster the department temporarily at times like this. I love being a generalist as I get so much variety in my daily life. One minute I’m advising on employment law for new policies and the next I’m researching new employee feedback platforms. My day rate as a temp is excellent and I enjoy the challenge and the change.”

The personal assistant

Julie is working as a PA on an ongoing basis for a company in Shoreditch. “I’ve been doing this role for nine months now. I am the first point of contact for various executives in the business and mostly my role involves diary and inbox management. I organise travel as well as meetings and client visits. I also process all of the expense claims for the executive team. The role is temporary, which means there’s a bit more flexibility and the pay is better for me. However, it looks like this may become a permanent role soon.”

The accounts officer

“I’m building my career in accounts,” says Rowan. “I manage the Purchase and Sales ledgers, supporting the more senior members of the team. I process invoices and purchase orders. I do a small amount of systems administration, as I’ve got excellent knowledge of the platform that the company uses. I’ve chosen to do temporary jobs in London at the moment as it’s a way of trying roles before deciding if they are right for me. Lots of temping roles go on to become permanent.”
