“I just need to get my foot in the door”

It’s a constant thing we hear from job seekers: “I just need to get my foot in the door.” But how can you actually connect with a hiring manager and be seen through the crowd of applications they’re inundated with when they’re advertising for office support jobs in London? How can you get noticed enough to prove that you’re what they’re looking for?

The great news is that there are actually tons of ways to get that metaphorical foot in the door. Here are some of our favourites...

1. If there’s a position, apply for it

It’s obvious, imperfect, and so often overlooked! If the company is openly hiring, then they’re on the lookout for good talent. So, even if the job isn’t perfect but you want to work for that employer, consider applying. Many hiring managers will consider the right talent even if they don’t currently have an open vacancy. They can always keep you in mind for a different role in the future.

2. Walk in with a temporary job

Temping in London is a perfect way to get your foot in the door. It varies enormously, but often a temporary job can become permanent or lead to another opportunity in the organisation. Temp roles are generally easier to secure. Working in temporary jobs is ideal for proving your worth.

3. Build a relationship with them online

Follow the company on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, and interact with them. Really show that you’re willing, and check out their latest blogs and offer comments. Target the very companies you want to work for. Get noticed. Also, use LinkedIn to build connections within the company. Identify people who work there and connect.

4. Stand out from the crowd

With office support jobs in London, there are lots of applications for every role. You aren’t going to get your foot in the door if you look the same as everyone else. Take care to apply specifically for that individual role and do something to stand out from the crowd. A striking cover letter and a carefully constructed CV can go a long way.

5. Use London recruitment agencies to your advantage

Recruitment agencies have much more open and high level connectivity with employers. Often, their relationships with hiring managers span years. If you can build a good and effective relationship with your recruitment consultant, then they will act as an effective conduit to the employer. If you work hard to build the relationship with the recruitment consultant, they will be able to see where you add value and leverage your success for you.

With some careful, strategic planning and a diligent approach, it is possible to get your foot in the door at most companies. You’ll need to be persistent and use a variety of resources to get noticed for all the right reasons and seem a tantalising prospect but it is possible.

Make use of lots of different opportunities and ideas, then build the connections that will open doors. We’re here to help you secure the role you want with the employer you’ve had your eye on. Get in touch on 020 7870 7177.
