Got a Job Offer? Ask Yourself These Questions

Posted on Thursday, July 8, 2021 by The InterviewerNo comments

The job offer is in, and many recruitment agencies in London will tell you to stop hesitating and just get on and accept it. Whilst that may be what you end up doing – because it’s the right choice for you – there’s not actually a desperate rush. You have enough time to pause and ask yourself these four questions, to be sure that this is indeed the right career move.

Remember, this isn’t a decision you should take lightly. It’s a big change and you should be sure it’s going to be the right move for you.

Do I like my potential colleagues?

This is a huge deal! A job can look absolutely fantastic on paper, but if you don’t gel with the people you’ll be working with day in, day out, then it’s going to be miserable.

This can actually be really tricky. It means that you have to be quite savvy further up in the recruitment process. At the interview, ask to meet your potential colleagues. Remember, in office support jobs, you’ll need to work effectively as a team. It’s okay to ask if you can spend a few hours shadowing someone, to give you an insight into what it’s really like to work at the company.

You can also do some social media sleuthing , to see if you can find out more about the people you’ll be working with (be careful not to be creepy).

How are you going to shine in this position?

You need to have the opportunity to shine! It’s not just about your career progression but about your daily happiness. We all feel better when we’re good at what we do, and when we also feel appreciated for that.

So, consider if you know what you’ll really be doing on an everyday basis. Do you know what projects are coming your way? Do you know that it’s your skills that are going to stand out from the crowd? How do you feel you can contribute to the company’s goals?

How aligned are your values with those of the company?

This is a biggie – you need to be on the same page! It is soul destroying to work your heart out for an employer doing something you don’t believe in. You need to feel connected to, and aligned with, the company’s values, so you’re not constantly fighting against your own personality just to fit in.

Do I feel valued and committed at this stage?

Lastly, do you feel you’re being offered a fair and market-savvy salary and benefits package, or do you already feel undervalued? Have you worked out the commute, and will it actually work around your life for the long-term? How much longer or shorter is this commute? Is it an easy journey, or does it involve multiple connections or no parking? How does flexible or remote working work? Are they options?

So, before you snatch that job offer, just feeling grateful to have been offered it, stop and think about these questions. You’ll then be sure that you’re making the right decisions for you and your career, and feel fully committed from day one.
