Are You Looking Forward to Getting Back Into Your London Office?

Tight restrictions continue, and the message is to continue working from home if possible. For those in office support jobs in London, that means yet more weeks (or even months) of virtual interactions, remote connections, and being at home instead of the office. It’s the same for us here at our London recruitment agency — homeworking is now the norm. But if you’re anything like us, you’re desperate to get back into your London office. We chatted to some of our people about it.

I chose to work in London for a reason

“I’ve had enough of seeing a tractor going past when I’m on a Teams call,” Mandy declares. “I want to be in the vibrancy of the capital. I chose to work in London for a reason: I’m a city girl at heart. I used to curse my commute some days, but now I miss it. I miss the routine and the bustle. I can’t wait to get back into the office, but I think it’ll be another few months yet.”

I’m enjoying getting to know where I live

Michael views things differently. “A year ago, my favourite coffee shop was a Starbucks near work. Now my favourite coffee shop is a local independent business. I pop down before lunch and buy a sandwich and drink to take home. I feel like I’ve become part of my local community, and I love that. It makes me feel good that my money is supporting local business and helping them stay afloat.”

I’m finding every day feels the same

“I really want to get back into the office,” says Waheeda. “I feel like every day rolls into one. My job is quite repetitive, and it was the social interaction at work that made it fun and interesting. Without that, I feel like I’m on a treadmill. I’m keen to get back into the office as soon as possible.”

Furlough in winter is depressing

Jamal was furloughed in the spring and has been again until his company’s workload picks back up, hopefully in early spring. “It’s just so depressing,” he says. “In spring, I could get some sunshine, and I had all these projects underway. In winter, it’s just not the same. I have no motivation. I’m worried about money. I feel cut off from the rest of society and unproductive. I really can’t wait to be able to get back into the office.”

I feel like the culture has changed

Seb is a department manager. “With everyone at home, I feel like we’ve lost our company culture,” he explains. “To begin with, we felt energised and tried to have social events online. Now, people just want to do their job and log off. We’ve had enough of screens. As a result, we don’t feel so connected. I think we need to get back to the office so that we feel like a proper team again. We’re missing out on bouncing ideas off each other informally.”

Who thought we’d miss office life so much?!

It appears that a few months of novelty back in the spring was one thing, but now we’ve all realised what we love about office life. Hopefully, it’s not too much longer before we can all get back to office-working — and never complain about it again!
