How to Choose Your Recruitment Agency: The Candidate’s View

The number of recruitment agencies in London can be daunting. How do you begin to find the right one to support you, encourage you, and ultimately help you get that dream job?

Here, we share our five top tips for candidates looking to choose a recruitment agency:

  1. Choose a specialist

Recruitment agencies in London are hugely diverse. Some are enormous and say they cater for every industry. Others are tiny and highly specialist. The most important thing to look for is a recruitment agency specialising in the area of work you’re looking for.

At Love Success, for example, we’re an office support and PA recruitment agency. We specialise in matching office support candidates with roles across the capital. Our recruitment consultants are experienced and knowledgeable about these roles, often having a background in them. What’s more, businesses come to us to fill their vacancies because they know we specialise in these areas.

  2. What do they do?

Not all recruitment agencies follow the same processes. Some will be incredibly client-centric — they’re the ones paying the bills, after all. However, this is a short-sighted approach.

Check out what the recruitment agency offers to candidates. Do they offer training and assessments so that you can build your skills and prove your worth? Will they help with writing your CV? Do they have an informative blog that’s supportive of candidates and offers useful advice?

A good recruitment agency will actively support candidates to improve their applications and showcase their skills and capabilities in the best possible way.

  3. Have other candidates had positive experiences?

Feel free to ask potential recruitment agencies in London some pertinent questions. You could what the percentage of candidates still in the position after one year is, for example. This will reveal how successfully they match candidates to employers.

Another good way of finding out what candidates think is to look at the temporary side of the business. Do they look after their temps so that they stay on the books?

  4. Check out their website and social media

You can find out a lot about an agency by looking at their digital footprint. See for yourself if their values align with yours and if you feel they’re supportive of applicants. There should be plenty of value-driven content to help candidates get the most out of the recruitment process.

Check out the Love Success Facebook page for a good example of this.

  5. Ask others

If you’ve got a good network of people within your industry, ask them if they’d recommend a certain recruitment agency. At Love Success, a huge number of our newly registered candidates come from personal recommendations. Recommendations give you assurance that an agency has worked well for others like you.

There may be a huge number of recruitment agencies in London, but that needn’t be overwhelming. Use the criteria above to select your London recruitment agency.
