Spring Cleaning Needs to Extend to Your Desk!

With many of the nation’s office workers currently working from home due to coronavirus, many of us are spending a lot more time in our houses than usual. For some, this has meant a thorough home spring clean and declutter. However, it’s easy to forget that spring cleaning needs to extend to your desk. If you’re working from home, your home desk needs some love too! Here are five good reasons to spring clean your home office desk (and this extends to your work desk when normal office life resumes!).
- Tidy desk = tidy mind
Life in office support jobs is busy, and you need to be able to focus. Unfortunately, a messy desk is a distracting desk. If your desk is tidy, organised, and clear, then your brain will feel more relaxed. This should make you feel more professional, competent, and organised, especially if you’re adapting to life working from home. So if you don’t want to feel disorganised and chaotic, channel your inner Marie Kondo and clear it out.
- It allows efficiency to blossom
Clear spaces are efficient spaces. If everything has a place and everything is in that place, you’ll be able to lay your hands on it quickly instead of wasting time looking for things or muttering “I know it’s here somewhere”. So chuck out the rubbish, give everything a home, make filing your friend, and ditch the surface clutter.
- Space is beautiful
Even working from home, office support and PA workers in London typically have a whole heap of paperwork on their desk. The trick is not to let it sit on your desk for long. This is particularly true in roles where you’re dealing with multiple things at the same time. Maximise space by going paperless where you can. You may find it helpful to use apps for things like calendars.
- Security matters
GDPR may not be the hot topic like it was in 2018, but that doesn’t make it any less important. One of the easiest, most straightforward ways to keep data safe is to ensure it’s not in paper form and on your desk. Even if your stacks of paper don’t include private data, people in your home environment shouldn’t have access to your work documents.
- The obvious one, hygiene
At the moment, washing your hands is at the top of everyone’s mind, but it’s also important to keep your desk clean and hygenic—whether it’s at home or in the office. Wipe your desk down, and clean your keyboard and mouse regularly with an antibacterial cleaner. The tidier your desk is, the easier it is to clean!
Use the motivation of the spring sunshine to get your desk clean, tidy, and organised. We promise you’ll feel better for it.
