Does the Way You Look Affect Your Career Prospects?

From education and qualifications though to experience and even location, there are a whole host of factors that can affect your career prospects. Many UK workers believe that your physical appearance is one of those factors—and might hinder your chances of securing your dream job, whether it’s a top London PA job, an EA to a HNWI, or office manager. So let’s take a look.

Appearance in hiring

According to a recent study of 1,040 UK workers by CV-Library, 70.4% of Brits believe the way you look affects your career prospects. A staggering 81.9% believe that employers actually discriminate against individuals based on their appearance. The study also found that 79% of professionals believe the way someone looks can affect their chance of finding a job.

Appearance in the workplace

Of those surveyed, 57% feel it can impact the way co-workers perceive you, and 30.4% believe appearance impacted how much your boss liked you. What’s more, 33.7% think that an individual’s appearance could affect their chances of a promotion, 23.3% felt that someone’s physical appearance had an impact on your salary, and 28% stated that appearance could affect an employee’s negotiating power.

What can be done to address this?

The study identified a number of ways this unconscious basis can be avoided. 44% of professionals suggested that more than one recruiter should be involved in the hiring process, while 22% stated that telephone interviews should take place initially, removing any bias based on physical appearance. 18% also suggested blind hiring, while 14% said that recruiters shouldn’t be allowed to do a web search on potential employees.
