Are you the “office White Rabbit” i.e. the person who turns up late for work every day? If so, it might be time to improve your punctuality, especially if you have set working hours such as receptionist jobs, or your employer has raised your lack of punctuality as an issue. Thankfully, there are many steps you can take to improve your timekeeping! So here are our top tips on getting to the office on time, from leading office support recruitment agency Love Success.
Understand the consequences
While you might not see your timekeeping as a problem, persistent lateness can have serious consequences in office jobs. If you have agreed working hours, being late could lead to warnings or disciplinaries, being overlooked for promotions and other exciting opportunities, or even losing your job. If you work in temporary jobs, it might mean not getting offered the permanent role. At the very least, it may lead your employer to question your commitment to the role.
Figure out the reason
To stop being late, you first need to identify the primary cause. Is your lateness linked to transport issues? Do you find it hard to get out of bed on time? Is your morning regime taking too long? Are you slowed down by tasks that could have been completed the night before, such as preparing lunch or choosing your clothes? Once you’ve identified the main reason, you can start making changes.
Get a good night’s sleep
If getting sufficient sleep is the problem, try going to bed earlier to get seven or eight hours sleep in. Avoid consuming caffeine in the evening. Sleep problems have increased due to smartphones and social media, so try not to take technology to bed with you. Studies have found strong links between insomnia and blue light emitted by smartphones. If you need entertainment before bed, try reading a book or listening to soft music instead.
Prepare in the evening
If you find yourself rushing in the morning, then prepare everything you can the night before. Choose your clothes and have them ready and ironed to save time in the morning. Pack your lunch and keep it in the fridge. If you drive, make sure you have enough petrol. If you use public transport, could you get a prepaid pass, and take an earlier bus or train? Get any paperwork together that you need, especially if you work in PA or EA jobs.
Consider carpools
If transport is an issue, then consider car pools or car sharing. They’re often faster than public transport—and cut the cost of getting to and from work. They’re also better for the environment than everyone driving separately. What’s more, they can make you more committed to punctuality, as the driver will pick you up at the same time each day.
