What Time of Year Is Best for Job Hunting?

Personal circumstances, career progression opportunities, and even a desire to travel can all influence when you want to look for permanent PA jobs, executive assistant jobs, and receptionist jobs, but it’s important to look at things from a recruitment perspective if you want to give yourself the best chance of landing your dream role. At our leading London recruitment agency, we work year round to match candidates with their dream roles, so we’ll let you in on when it’s best to start your job search in 2018…

New year, new job

If you type “when’s the best time of year to look for a new job” into a search engine like Google, you’ll be given a wealth of advice pointing to January as one of the best times to begin a job search. In fact, January 7th has a reputation for being the most popular day of the year for people to look for a job.

As such, you might be surprised to learn that competition for jobs is actually lowest in January, with less people applying for roles during this month. This suggests that although people are looking for jobs, many are not necessarily applying. Therefore, acting fast in January could be the secret to landing your dream role. So if you’re looking for PA jobs, EA jobs, or receptionist jobs, January is ideal.

Research carried out by Adzuna demonstrates that, in 2016, December was the second lowest month for advertised vacancies, but in February the number of vacancies soared, with as many as 40,000 extra roles advertised. There are lots more opportunities, but according to totaljobs data for 2016, competition increased from January to February by as much as 12.5%. It’s also worth keeping in mind that public sector openings have a tendency to decline as the end of the financial year draws near.

From Happy New Year to Halloween

If January isn’t a good time for you to begin your job search, you can always do so later in the year. However, don’t leave it too late. Data suggests that there’s less competition for roles in the first half the year compared to the last half the year, with 14% more people applying for jobs from July through to December than January to June. That means there’s likely to be more people competing for your dream job if you delay your search until later in the year.

Competition tends to be at its highest in October, with October 2016 competition levels at 28% above the January to June average. Totaljobs also recorded October as the most competitive month, with the majority of job adverts posted at this time of the year. One of the reasons for this is that most university students in the UK graduate during the summer, with most applications being made in October. Google searches for ‘grad jobs’ achieved peak popularity during the 2nd to 8th October 2016.

As a leading PA recruitment agency, we have an excellent understanding of the best times of the year to begin seeking out new job opportunities. However, we believe that while it’s important to consider these stats, you should not be deterred looking for jobs at any time of the year, especially in the current climate where there is an arguable talent shortage.
