Job Hunting: A Stressful Experience for UK Workers

Do you find searching for temporary or permanent PA jobs stressful? Then you’re certainly not alone. With recent studies revealing that most of the nation’s workers admit searching for a new job makes them feel worried and anxious, it’s clear that job hunting stress is a major problem affecting today’s workforce. But what is it about searching for a new role that’s so mentally demanding?

As a leading London PA recruitment agency, we want to make job hunting as stress-free as possible, so today we’ll look why job hunting is stressful and how it could be improved.

Why does job hunting cause so much stress?

The study of workers aimed to find out what aspects of job hunting makes them feel most stressed. Respondents cited various factors, including: finding a role that meets their needs; being turned down for roles that they have applied for; tailoring their cover letter and CV for every application; dealing with recruiters; and needing to take time off work for interviews. Professionals also revealed the areas of job hunting that leave them feeling discouraged during their job search. The top reasons were: not hearing back after applying for a job; not finding suitable roles; and being rejected for a role they really wanted.

Is there a solution?

Many people seem to accept stress as an inevitable part of looking for a new job, but is there a solution to the anguish that workers feel whilst job hunting? During the study, professionals were asked what they think can be done to reduce job hunting stress. Nearly 50% agreed that recruiters should provide feedback, and 35.9 per cent were of the view that candidates should be sent an email of acknowledgement, even if their application is unsuccessful. This demonstrates that job hunters become disheartened if they don’t hear back from their applications. Leaving candidates in the lurch causes them to feel tense and worried, leaving them experiencing unnecessary stress.

A solution to this is for recruiters to send candidates an email or call them up to provide feedback. It doesn’t need to be a time-consuming task and can help to put their minds at ease. Ultimately, both recruiter and jobseeker have a common goal – to land them a job. Therefore, it’s crucial that recruitment professionals are working alongside job hunters to help them in their search and reduce the level of stress they experience.
