How Do You Know When It’s Time for a Career Change?

Posted on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 by Love SuccessNo comments

In the current recruitment climate, it’s constantly drilled into workers that they should love their job, and that it should bring them fulfilment and happiness each and every day as they strive towards their goals. Employment in 2017 isn’t framed as a means to an end – it’s framed as something that should inspire and motivate us all.

There’s no denying that it’s important to be happy in your job – but what if you’re one of those people who doesn’t look forward to going to work? What if rather than feeling happy and motivated, you feel stressed and anxious about work? If your job doesn’t bring your fulfilment, how do you know when it’s time to move onto pastures new?

As a leading PA and secretarial recruitment agency, we've helped many people find a new, exciting, and enjoyable role...so here's our top tips for you to identify when it's time to look for a new job.

Sunday night dread

Every Sunday evening, you get an anxious feeling in the pit of your stomach about returning to work the next day. You might experience tension, your appetite might decrease (or increase – comfort eating, anyone?), and you might feel fatigued and stressed. This is a sure sign that you’re unhappy in your job – and it shouldn’t be this way! You shouldn’t have to overcome that Sunday-night anxiety just to make it into work on a Monday morning.

Total apathy

You’ve stopped caring about things that go right or wrong in the workplace. When your boss gives you positive feedback, it doesn’t give you that energised, happy feeling it used to. Similarly, when a client is unhappy, you simply can’t muster up the ability to care about their problem. Put simply – your heart isn’t in it anymore.

You haven’t progressed

If you’ve been in your job a certain number of years and haven’t made any progress (even though you’ve been giving it your all), maybe it’s time to look for a new position. Otherwise you can fall into an endless cycle. You’re unhappy at work because you haven’t been given a promotion. This causes further unhappiness and apathy, which puts you further out of the running for a new role higher up in the firm. The more you’re overlooked, the unhappier you become. Time to break the cycle!

Jealousy rears its head

When you hear friends or family members talk about their jobs with passion and enthusiasm, you’re filled with a sense of envy – even if they’re being paid far less than you. You’d love to have a job that you enjoyed, and you’d be willing to take a pay cut if it meant you were happier in your day-to-day working life.

You’ve looked up the alternatives

You’ve signed up to various job alerts, you’ve considered going freelance, you’ve thought about launching your own business, you’ve approached various recruitment agencies… these are all signs that you’re trying to move on, but haven’t quite worked up the courage to take the plunge. If you spend your spare time nowadays browsing job sites or daydreaming about a new job, now is the time to sign up with a recruitment agency and kick-start that new career! It's "new job o'clock"!
