Personal assistant. Executive secretary. Private aide to London’s busiest CEOs.
Call me what you will, but no title changes the fact that I’m head over heels in love with my job. The flexibility, the respect, the corporate culture, and the chance to be a part of London’s executive scene… I absolutely adore it.
So how did I score such a job? It’s all thanks to a recruitment agency in London that specialises in executive assistant jobs. Curious to see how a day as PA unfolds? Welcome to my life…
Wake up call
I represent the head of one of London’s most prestigious marketing agencies, so even though this is just a temporary job, I’m still focused on looking my best. My number one fashion tip? Invest in luxe staples like a beautifully tailored pencil skirt from Whistles, and mix things up with on-trend (and oh so affordable) pieces from high street meccas like TopShop or H&M.
En route to the Wharf
Heading to the office for an 8am start, I swing by my new favourite London café. Americano for my boss, latte for me, thanks very much. Battling the Canary Wharf crowds isn’t my favourite thing, but in a nice pair of L.K Bennet pumps - anything’s possible.
Taming the inbox
First task of the day – taming my boss’s inbox. These things can get wild, and I use a tried and tested system to keep things in check. For me, five times a day is the magic number that keeps correspondents happy, and my own stress levels relatively calm.
Briefing the boss
When my boss waltzes in, I’ve already gone over her schedule for the day, and offer a brief rundown of how the next eight hours are going to pan out. Today, there’s a meeting I scheduled with the company’s Birmingham CEO last week, coffee with a new client, and a couple of important phone calls to make. She tells me she’d be lost without me, and complements my new Milli Millu tote. Ah the joys of working for a forty-something-year-old female boss.
Lunch in London
1pm ticks over, and for the office that means one thing - it’s lunch time baby. My boss is a stickler for healthy eating, and I have to admit her love for all things organic is rubbing off on me. So, rather than head to Pret for a sandwich fix, I head to Deliciously Ella’s brand spanking new Mae Deli in Marylebone. It seems like the whole of London is in love with Ella and her gorgeous food, and you can’t blame ‘em!
Afternoon errands
While I’m out and about, I run a few errands, including posting a few documents, and picking up my boss’s dress from the dry cleaners. OK, so this isn’t necessarily in the contract, but I’m happy to go above and beyond.
Work and play
The rest of the afternoon is spent typing out minutes from the meeting, answering emails, and organising a detailed travel itinerary for my boss’s upcoming trip to the States. She’s attending a conference in Chicago, so I’m busy booking business class flights, checking out hotels, and even putting together a few restaurant recommendations. Got to admit, this doesn’t feel like work!
Wrapping up
I’m always willing to stay a little longer if necessary, but it’s Friday and my boss is off to an evening show so I’m off the hook and good to go at five. Hello happy hour.
